WALKING WITH JESUS
for children in years 4-6
For the second year in the parish, we are offering support for families to follow up their first Holy Communion during Advent, in three Saturday morning sessions. Our ‘Walking with Jesus’ programme is for children from all three of our parish communities, especially those who don’t attend St Joseph’s School and would like an opportunity to grow further in the Catholic faith. The sessions will take place in the PNL Centre at Holy Family 10am -11.30am on Saturday 2nd, 9th and 16th December. As a parent you are most welcome to join in the sessions with the catechists and children. They are designed to give the children a wide range of experiences: exploring Scripture, expressing their beliefs and feelings through art and music, reflection and prayer, and connecting with each other in games and conversation. If you would like to register your child for this opportunity, or would like more information, please contact the parish office at [email protected] or (01737) 761017.
SAFEGUARDING IN THE PARISH
Some roles in the parish require volunteers to have a DBS check which are renewed every 3 years. Katie Jones, our Safeguarding Rep, will be contacting people if a re-check is needed. However if you are in a role in the parish and have not had a recheck or if you have any query on the DBS process please contact Katie on 01737 761017.
OLD £1 COINS AND APF BOXES
Our old £1 coins cease to become legal tender after 15th Oct, so if it is the case that you have an APF box with one or more of them sitting inside, please would you hand it in now (to one of our sacristies) so that we don’t have an ‘issue’ later in the year. Of course, if you do have an APF box, and also an old £1 coin currently outside the box, you could always pop the coin in the box and then hand the box in! Thank you.
SVP – (FOREIGN) CASH4COINS
If your summer holiday is a receding memory, but you happen to have retained some loose foreign coins (or indeed notes), you can help the SVP by putting these in any collections taken at Masses in our parish. They will be separated out, aggregated and sent on to the SVP Cash4Coins scheme. Thank you in anticipation – and we hope that you had a good holiday!
SURREY’S FIRST COMMUNITY CAFE
A not-for-profit community cafe will be opening soon in the new Merstham Hub called the Merstham Mix. The objectives are to strengthen the local community bonds, promote healthy eating, provide affordable food to all and free hot meals to all our local food-bank users. We will also be reducing food waste by supplementing our kitchen with food surpluses from supermarkets and farms. Merstham Facilities Community Trust and Loveworks are on the organising end and although we have a wonderful chef, we need volunteers for the kitchen and FOH to keep our costs low. If you would like the opportunity (training given!) please contact Anna on 07929498430 or [email protected] gmail.com for more information. Our website is www.mersthamcc.org.uk to read all about it!

Bishop Richard is to begin a series of consultations with the lay faithful and priests of the diocese from the autumn. This will involve meeting representatives from each parish and asking them to enter into dialogue with their communities. Entitled ‘The Word who is Life’ the Bishop asks us to look to the future: “In order for us to foster prayer, develop formation and ensure continuing mission, we must review our Diocesan and Parish life. This must be carried out at a time when the ratio of priests to people of changing. This will be challenging for all concerned and difficult decisions must be made.”
WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP HOMELESS PEOPLE IN OUR AREA?
As you are aware, our parish has, for the past 2 years, joined with other local churches to provide a venue for the Winter Night Shelter. Renewed Hope Trust is the charity behind this very worthwhile cause, providing assistance and shelter to local homeless people. They also now run a Drop In Centre in Redhill Monday – Thursday from 11am till 3.00pm. They would welcome help from anyone who can spare an hour or two either as a one-off or on a regular basis to provide this much needed link during the months when the Night Shelter is not running. If you think you can help please contact Lucy at [email protected] or 07889 144618.
YOUTH, FAITH AND VOCATION
If you are aged between 13-29 years old, the Catholic Church in England and Wales would like to hear from you. We want to hear what your life is like, your thoughts on faith and connection with the Catholic Church. To help you tell us we have created a Mega Youth Poll that you can access via https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/parish-youth-poll or by searching for 'Catholic Mega Youth Poll'. If you are over this age limit but would like to help, please encourage the young people you know to respond to this poll.
Come and join us in the Café in the PNL Centre at St Joseph’s on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and have a FREE tea or filter coffee when you purchase any hot food. The café is open term times Monday to Friday 10.30am - 1.30pm.
ARE YOU FREE OR JUST RETIRED and looking for something to do? Why not volunteer in the Retreat Café at St Joseph’s and make new friends. If you would like to know more please contact the parish office on 01737 761017.
BEQUESTS THANK YOU
We are very grateful that a number of parishioners from our three churches have assisted our parish by gifting a donation to the parish in their wills. A sheet has been prepared by the diocese outlining the wording that should be used for this. It also includes information on Foundation Masses and bequests to our diocese. If you would like more information please take one of the blue sheets at the backs of all our churches.
